Ingredients

  • 3 medium pcs potatoes (preferably type B or C)
  • ½ small pc red onion
  • 1 pc egg
  • 2 tbsp fine wheat flour
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper
  • 3 tbsp sunflower cooking oil

Steps

  • 1
Peel the potatoes and grate them on a large-holed grater. Place the grated potatoes in a clean kitchen towel or paper towel and squeeze out all excess moisture thoroughly. This ensures that the hash browns will be truly crispy.
  • 2
In a bowl, mix the grated potatoes with the finely chopped onion (if using). For a better consistency, add the egg and flour. If you prefer a simpler version, you can omit these. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • 3
Heat enough oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Form small patties from the mixture (using about 2-3 tablespoons of mixture per patty). Place the patties in the hot oil and fry both sides for 3-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • 4
Drain the cooked hash browns on paper towels to remove excess oil. Serve hot as a side dish with breakfast, or on their own with your favorite sauces.
  • 5
If you want a healthier version, you can bake them in the oven instead of frying: place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake at 200°C for about 20-25 minutes.
