Ingredients
- 500 g minced beef (10% fat content)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 clove garlic (crushed)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 400 g canned chopped tomatoes
- 2 pieces bay leaf
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch ground black pepper
- 250 g basmati rice (for side dish)
- 4 tablespoons Greek yogurt (for serving)
- 1 handful fresh basil (for garnish)
- 1 teaspoon oregano (dried or fresh)
Steps
- 1Preheat the oven to 200–210 °C. Prepare a medium-sized (approx. 30x40 cm) baking tray or ovenproof dish.
- 2In a large bowl, mix the minced beef with dried oregano, crushed garlic, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Thoroughly combine the mixture.
- 3Pour 100 ml of water into the baking tray, add the chopped tomatoes and bay leaves. Form meatballs of approx. 55–60 grams from the meat mixture and place them into the tomato base.
- 4Place the baking tray in the oven and bake the meatballs for 15–18 minutes, until the meat is fully cooked and the sauce thickens.
- 5Meanwhile, cook the basmati rice in lightly salted water according to the instructions on the package.
- 6Serve the cooked meatballs with steamed rice, topped with a spoonful of Greek yogurt. Garnish with fresh basil or extra oregano.
