Cut the dried fruits into small, peanut-sized pieces. If you are not using cocktail cherries or juicy dried plums, it is worth soaking the fruits overnight in apple juice, orange juice, or even just water to soften them.
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Heat a dry pan over medium heat, add the hazelnuts, and toast them, shaking constantly, until fragrant. Pour into a bowl, let cool, then chop into coarser pieces.
Wipe the pan clean with a paper towel, add the oat flakes, and toast until light golden. Make sure to stir constantly, as burnt oat flakes and hazelnuts will be bitter.
