Ingredients
- 4-5 slices of stale bread (white, whole wheat, ciabatta, or baguette)
- 3 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- 1-2 cloves garlic, finely chopped or crushed (optional)
- 1 teaspoon dried herbs (e.g., oregano, thyme, or rosemary)
- salt (to taste)
- pepper (to taste)
For serving
- grated Parmesan cheese for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
- 1Cut the stale bread into smaller, approximately 1-2 cm cubes. If the bread is very hard, use a serrated knife.
- 2In a bowl, mix the olive oil (or melted butter) with the crushed garlic, dried herbs, salt, and pepper. Add the bread cubes and toss thoroughly to ensure they are coated everywhere with the seasoned oil.
- 3Preheat the oven to 180°C. Spread the bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Stir them once or twice during baking for even browning.
- 4Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. If desired, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese while still warm.
Tip
When stored in an airtight container, the croutons remain crispy for days. They are excellent with cream soups, such as tomato or garlic cream soup, but also perfect for Caesar salad.
Kifli Kukták
A krutonokat légmentesen záródó edényben tárolva napokig ropogósak maradnak. Kiválóan illenek krémlevesekhez, például paradicsom- vagy fokhagymakrémleveshez, de Cézár-salátához is tökéletesek.
