The first Leerdammer was born in 1974, and it owes its name to the nearby town of Leerdam. When Leerdammer cheese was produced, it could not be classified as any existing type of cheese - e.g. Gouda, Emmental or butter cheese. The unique flavour of the cheese and the large holes are so special that a new name was created, Leerdammer. Thanks to its characteristic flavour and outstanding quality, Leerdammer is still an unsurpassed original cheese. Leerdammer is currently one of the most popular cheeses in many European countries, and is available in several varieties and flavours.
