Producer information

In the early 1800s, Spanish settlers - two brothers, Benjamin and Eduardo Camp, and their partner Evaristo Alvarez - settled in Cuba. Based on their secret recipe and the famous Spanish sherry/brandy production methods, they set up their rum distillery. The Matusalem Rum name was born in 1872.

Esto es mas viejo que Matusalem, meaning older than Methuselah, refers to the making and ageing of the rum. It survived the strife of Cuba's independence, and drew strength from the American Prohibition, the Golden Age of Cocktails. In 1956, an era came to an end, and the family was forced into exile.

In 1997, Dr. Claudio Alvarez, the great-grandson of the founder, revived the legendary brand. According to the current set-up, the company headquarters are in Miami, while the rum is produced and bottled in Santiago and the Dominican Republic, where the soil, climate and quality of the sugar cane, combined with the family recipe, guarantee the original quality.
