Description
Nectarine, or 'kopaszbarack' (bald peach), is a special variety of peach. Its taste is almost identical to the sweet flavour of peach, but its flesh is firmer and less juicy. Most often, we consume it fresh, but it can also be used to make jam, compote, and cakes. Served as a side dish, it is a real delicacy. Rich in vitamins A and C, it is a good diuretic and detoxifying fruit, making its consumption particularly recommended during summer diets. Its blood pressure-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects have also been proven. Due to its medium pectin content, a thicker jam or preserve can only be cooked with a longer cooking time, or by adding other high-pectin fruits or gelling agents.
The red-fleshed nectarine is a special, striking, and delicious variety of the traditional nectarine. Outwardly similar to yellow-fleshed varieties, its interior reveals deep red or crimson-hued, succulent flesh, often darker around the pit. Its skin is smooth, thin, typically reddish-orange, sometimes with slightly yellowish spots.
Characteristics:
- Flesh colour: vibrant red or burgundy, often veined, especially near the pit
- Taste: sweet, slightly tart, more complex than yellow-fleshed varieties; some varieties also carry subtle berry (e.g., raspberry, redcurrant) aromas
- Texture: juicy, soft, but easy to cut; not mealy
- Scent: intense, fruity, with floral notes
Uses:
- Excellent for fresh consumption
- A colourful and special element in fruit salads
- Striking and delicious in desserts (pie, galette, cake)
- Also pairs well with cheeses, ham, and grilled dishes
