Sesame seeds originate from India, but they have been widespread and naturalized throughout Asia and the Mediterranean for thousands of years. They are also mentioned in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and members of the Roman army consumed sesame seeds mixed with honey to maintain their strength.

Black sesame seeds, unlike their white relatives, are unhulled and more common in the Far East. They have a stronger aroma.

Suggested use

They are mostly used to decorate homemade breads and pastries. You can mix them into the dough or sprinkle them on top. You can enhance their aroma by gently toasting them, which can make even a simple hamburger bun special.
