Benedek Elek's Christmas - edge-painted edition

If we read a Hungarian folk tale, it's almost certain that Benedek Elek wrote it, that it speaks in his voice. As a tale collector, he not only slavishly transcribed the stories he heard but also gave them form, polishing them to perfection. He was a very small child when a peasant girl's storytelling captivated him: "after the first tale, I cried and begged for the second, the third, the fourth, and then, God knows how many more – she had no peace from me anymore." Already as a student, he began collecting the treasures of his narrower homeland, Kisbacon in Székelyföld and its surroundings. At the peak of his career, in the year of the Millennium, his enormous collection containing a thousand tales, 'Magyar mese- és mondavilág' (Hungarian World of Tales and Legends), was published.

In the second, larger part of their book, they selected perhaps lesser-known folk tales from this treasury, whose main protagonist is most often Christ, a charmingly ordinary figure who – between us – seems more like a cunning Székely character than the Son of God. In the first part of the book, Benedek Elek appears as a Budapest journalist and novelist, who recalls the holidays of his childhood with heartbreaking nostalgia, or puts on paper the typically Christmas problems of adults in the big city. Humor and elevation, a Székelyföld village and a bustling metropolis, nostalgia and eternity – this is Benedek Elek's secret, with which he still has a great impact on us, his enthusiastic readers.
