Nutella® was originally a clever answer to a difficult problem: the cocoa shortage after the Second World War.
Pietro Ferrero, a Piedmontese Italian confectioner, created a sweet, spreadable cream from hazelnuts, sugar and a little bit of cocoa - which was very rare at that time. He shaped the mass into a loaf - which could be sliced later and placed on slices of bread. He named the delicacy 'Giandujot', after the famous carnival character of the time. The Ferrero company was officially founded on May 14, 1946.
