The resourceful headwaiter sliced corn tortillas into triangles, fried them until crispy, and served them with grated cheddar cheese and sliced jalapeños.

The original nachos are served as an appetizer in Mexican restaurants (topped with a sauce such as salsa, guacamole, or avocado), but today they are most popular as a snack, served with a dip, or used as breading for vegetables or meat in modern cuisine.
