Like every serious success story, this one also began with a special and unique personality from the company's early days. Josef Manner, a trained merchant, opened his first shop in 1890, a stone's throw from St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, where he primarily sold chocolate bars and fig coffee. From the very beginning, Josef Manner pursued the strategy of selling higher quality chocolate products more cheaply than the competition: "Every child who gives even one kreuzer for my products should not just receive a sweet, but also valuable nourishment," he liked to say.
