Description
The shamrock plant originates from the tropical regions of Columbia and Venezuela, where it typically forms part of the humid undergrowth. It is one of the easiest houseplants to keep, and with its continuous flowering, it can be a worthy ornament to our semi-shaded rooms. With proper care, it will quickly become our grateful plant. It is a bushy plant, which can grow to be up to 1 metre wide and tall. Its leaves are lanceolate, shiny, and are attractive even without flowers. Its flowers grow on long stems, which are not real flowers, but so-called bracts, which surround the spadix. These leaves can last up to 6 weeks and in the meantime, they transform from white to green. It flowers most vigorously in spring. The sap of its leaves contains a substance that irritates the skin and mucous membranes!
Care
It requires a bright and semi-shaded place, too much sunlight will brown the flower, and with too little sunlight, it will not flower regularly. 18-25 °C room temperature is ideal for it. It is a houseplant with average water requirements, its soil must be kept moist. Water it weekly from spring to summer, if possible with softer, room temperature water. If the summer is very hot, you can also humidify its environment or spray its leaves. When spraying, be careful not to let water get on its flowers, because they will turn brown. In autumn and winter, its water requirement is lower. It is characteristic of it that it visibly indicates when it is thirsty, its leaves droop, but they quickly recover when it gets water.
Interesting fact
In addition to purifying the air, the shamrock plant is able to filter out harmful substances that are usually found in wall paints. Thanks to this, it has a beneficial effect on low blood pressure, and also reduces the chance of developing a headache.
The purchased plant must always be replanted in order for it to survive in the apartment in the long term. We recommend replanting it in a larger pot or box, so that it feels good in the heated apartment and does not wilt. It is important not to forget to spray it (with water)!
