Ivy-leaved cyclamen

We tend to associate cyclamen with houseplants, although in addition to indoor cyclamen, there are also species that are completely winter-hardy when planted in the garden. Examples include the forest cyclamen, native to our country, or the ivy-leaved cyclamen, originating from Southern Europe and Turkey. This latter species is the easiest cyclamen to grow.

The cyclamen is an ideal choice for plant arrangements, or as a winter decorative plant, in pots, even on the table.

Cyclamen, belonging to the Primulaceae family, have marbled ornamentation similar to ivy. It blooms in autumn, breaking through the soil with its flowers first after the summer dormancy period, but its developing leaves soon follow the graceful curling flower stalks.

The purchased plant must always be repotted to ensure its long-term survival indoors. We recommend repotting them into a larger pot or container so that they feel good in a heated apartment and do not wilt. It is important not to forget to spray (with water)!

Care

In the garden, the ivy-leaved cyclamen requires a semi-shady spot, protected from direct afternoon sun. During the growing season, it prefers consistently moist soil, but during the dormant period, it requires dry conditions, otherwise, its tubers can easily rot. Preferably, give it leaf compost every year when its leaves recede. Pests and diseases rarely harm it, but it is worth paying attention to snails and slugs.

Interesting facts

Its solitary, pink or white flowers are drooping, with reflexed petals. Its showy, thick leaves remain throughout the winter, only receding towards the end of spring. The plant's height is only 10-15cm.
