Planting onion sets is simple and an ideal choice for those who want to grow their own chemical-free vegetables.

You can plant onions in raised beds and in open ground alike, the key is to place them 3-5 centimeters apart from each other, so the vegetables can comfortably grow next to each other.

It's worth following these rules

• When planting, it's important that the onion's root system faces downwards.
• The planting depth, similar to the spacing, can be 3-5 cm.
• Onions have high nutrient requirements and also like sunny spots.
• If you plant them next to carrots, the onions and carrots will protect each other from the carrot fly.
• You can confidently plant them next to peppers, tomatoes, cabbages, and lettuces, but it's also worth placing a few among strawberries.

You can harvest onion sets as green onions as early as April, but no later than May. For cooking, you can harvest them in July, as this is when the onion bulbs develop.
