Description
Curly Kale
Its root is a rapidly lignifying taproot, which branches into a few thicker lateral roots at the bottom. The deep-penetrating root system provides stable support for the large green mass. The stem length varies by variety: 80–170 cm. It produces 14–20 leaves evenly along the stem. Its petiole is almost as long as the bluish-green, waxy leaf itself. It produces flowers and seeds in the second year; the flower stalk can grow up to 2 m. Bees are very fond of its flowers because it produces a lot of pollen, and a lot of very sugary nectar. Its seeds are approximately 1 mm, spherical, and dark brown.
Alongside Brussels sprouts, it is the other most cold-tolerant cabbage variety. It also tolerates summer heat well, and temperature fluctuations hardly affect its development. In our country, it does not freeze even in the coldest winters. It also survives in partial shade or dappled shade. Among cabbage varieties, it requires the least water; in some places, it can even be grown without irrigation. It can be grown in almost any soil. Its nutrient requirement is significant.
Storage:
Store in a dry, cool place, between 5-10°C.
