In 1968, the Budapest Knitting Company began producing the original Soviet dessert (in the Soviet Union, an ancestor of the curd-butter-sugar mixture filled with vanilla flavor and chocolate coating already existed under the name "glazirovannij szirok") The idea came to Hungary during a study trip between the COMECON countries. It was first produced in the Szabolcstej Mátészalka dairy plant, then production also started in the Nagybánhegyes Zalkatej dairy plant. Following the regime change, the manufacturing companies were privatized, as a result of which the production of Túró Rudi became the property of Friesland-Campina.
