The Budapesti Tejipari Vállalat started producing the originally Soviet sweet in 1968 (its ancestor, a vanilla-flavoured, chocolate-coated treat filled with a mixture of cottage cheese, butter, and sugar, already existed in the Soviet Union under the name "glazirovannij szirok"). The idea came to Hungary during a study trip among KGST countries. It was first produced at Szabolcstej's dairy plant in Mátészalka, then production also began at Zalkatej's dairy plant in Nagybánhegyes. Following the change of regime, the manufacturing companies were privatized, through which the production of Túró Rudi came into the ownership of Friesland-Campina.
