A croissant is a buttery, flaky, unique pastry of Italian origin, named for its historical crescent shape. Croissants are viennoiserie pastries made from a yeast-based dough. The dough is layered with butter, rolled and folded several times in succession—a process called laminating—in the manner of puff pastry. The result is a layered, flaky texture, similar to puff pastry.
