Stavanger canneries were among the first in Norway to develop the “sardines in tomato sauce”, and at the turn of the century they started to export this excellent Norwegian product all over the world. In 1902, King Oscar II of Norway and Sweden tasted the sardines from one of Stavanger’s prominent canneries, the Christian Bjelland Company. He was impressed.
