Ben & Jerry's was founded in 1978 by two hippies: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in Burlington, Vermont. The two friends opened their first store in a renovated gas station after taking an incredibly expensive ($5) "How to Make Ice Cream" correspondence course and purchasing the somewhat more expensive equipment. It didn't take long for people to fall in love with the two eccentrics' creations made from fresh Vermont milk and cream, and whatever ingredients suited their fancy that day. Although Ben and Jerry often argued about the various flavors, they always agreed that (besides the money) they were in the business to have a good time. Or as Jerry put it, "If it's not fun, why do it?"
