Ben & Jerry's was founded in 1978 by two hippies: Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield in Burlington, Vermont. The two friends opened their first store in a renovated gas station after taking an incredibly expensive ($5) "How to Make Ice Cream" correspondence course and buying the somewhat more expensive equipment. It didn't take long for people to fall in love with the duo's whimsical creations made with fresh Vermont milk and cream and whatever struck their fancy that day. Although Ben and Jerry often argued about flavors, they always agreed that (besides making money) they were in business to have fun. Or as Jerry put it, "If it's not fun, why do it?"
