Gala apples were developed in New Zealand in the mid-20th century. Today, they are grown on both hemispheres, making them available all year round. With a mild, fruity and floral flavour, and a crisp, fine-grained texture, it is an all-purpose variety suitable for both fresh and cooked preparations.
Uses
Gala apples are popular sliced into salads, added to chopped salads, arranged on fruit platters, or diced for salsas and chutneys. They can be combined with stronger-flavoured apples to make cakes, pies, galettes, crisps, crumbles, and strudels. They pair well with cheeses such as cheddar, brie, and Swiss cheese; nuts such as almonds, pecans, and walnuts; meats such as poultry, turkey, and pork; as well as pears, caramelized onions, and squash.
Producer information
Kávássy László is one of Eastern Hungary's most dedicated farmers, and his organic plantations are among the most beautiful. Kávássy is a third-generation apple and walnut grower from the Szatmár region, famous for centuries. He oversees his organic farming with 90% located in Jánkmajtis and 10% in Darnó. He grows a wide selection of apples and walnuts to fully meet customer needs. He cultivates the following apple varieties: Gala, Golden, Red Chief, Jonathan, and Idared. His walnut production is based on the Milotai 10 variety.
Kávássy László produces fruit according to the highest organic farming standards and is involved in every step of the process, whether plant protection, orchard care, or administrative work. The products he produces are 100% free of pesticide residues. His intensive apple orchard in Jánkmajtis is also technically at the forefront of apple growing. Kávássy László's orchard—equipped with hail protection netting, micro-sprinkler and overhead irrigation, modern machinery, and knowledge accumulated over generations—guarantees excellent quality. He elevates the quality of the fruit to the highest level through meticulous soil management, organic fertilization (instead of chemical fertilizers), and the application of natural spray preparations and herbs.
