The pungency of the pepper is caused by a substance called capsaicin. The strength of the jalapeno pepper ranges from 2500-10000 Scoville. The Scoville scale indicates the pungency of peppers.

Unlike other chili peppers, the jalapeno pepper is a moderately hot-spicy pepper. Its strength varies depending on the harvesting and preparation method.
