The company was founded in 1862 by the Spanish-born Don Facundo Bacardi Masso in Santiago de Cuba. In 1877, the company won its first gold medal at the World Exhibition in Spain for its quality. They threw out the rulebook and created their own blends with a revolutionary rum-making process that would change the way rum was made forever.
