The Ferrero Group's history is a third-generation success story, in which the development of a multinational corporation is in perfect harmony with the past, present and future of a steadfast Piedmontese family.
To understand the roots of this success, we must go back to the '40s. It was during these years that Michele's parents, Piera and Pietro transformed their confectionery shop into a factory. The Ferrero family were the first Italian confectionery manufacturers to open production plants and offices abroad in the post-World War II period, thus shaping the company into a truly international group. These first, decisive steps were made possible by the products invented by Pietro Ferrero and his son Michele, who was almost a child at the time. Another key to success was the effective sales network organised by Pietro's brother, Giovanni, who died in 1949.
After the company's success in Italy, Michele Ferrero decided to start production abroad as well. In 1956, a large plant was inaugurated in Germany, followed shortly afterwards by one in France. This was the forerunner of Ferrero's rapid European expansion, which was followed by sales offices and production centres in Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Spain. In the following decades, Ferrero became a global player, with companies and plants in North and South America, South-East Asia, Eastern Europe, Africa, Australia; and more recently in Turkey, Mexico and China.
