Douwe Egberts has been gathering a wealth of experience in the field of tea blending since 1753. This was the year when Egbert Douwe opened his first small shop, in which he sold coffee, tea and tobacco. Until April 1937, all the company's teas were marketed under the Douwe Egberts name.
At that time, Johannes Hessel was the director of Douwe Egberts, whose wife loved tea at least as much as the works of the famous English writer, Charles Dickens. Inspired by the novel The Pickwick Club, she suggested the name Pickwick to her husband. Douwe Egberts tea has been sold under this brand name ever since.
