Douwe Egberts has gathered a wealth of experience in producing tea blends since 1753. This was the year when Egbert Douwe opened his first small shop, selling coffee, tea, and tobacco. Until April 1937, all of the company's teas were marketed under the Douwe Egberts name.

At this time, Johannes Hessel was the director of Douwe Egberts, whose wife loved tea at least as much as the works of the famous English writer, Charles Dickens. Inspired by the novel The Pickwick Papers, she suggested the name Pickwick to her husband. Douwe Egberts tea has been sold under this brand name ever since.
