Canned Foods in Child Nutrition
Are canned foods really the fiercest enemies of gastronomy or are they excellent preservation methods with extremely manageable results? Opinions are divided on this, but it is certain that most people are reluctant to use canned foods if there is a baby in the family.
But should we worry, what should we pay attention to, and when is it actually advisable to choose canned foods?
The advantages of canned foods
- Foods stored in cans have numerous advantages that promote the wide applicability of the products even during the feeding of young children.
- They are easy and convenient to transport.
- They are made in practical portions from controlled quality plants under strictly tested conditions.
- We can choose based on the nutritional values.
- Within the given product group, various textures and plant types can be found.
- Their preparation can be solved time-efficiently, and for a mother, time is the most precious treasure - at least after her child.
- Mixes containing various vegetables and fruits are colorful, tasty, and offer different textures, making things easier for both the baby and the mother.
- Canned foods are much cheaper than fresh seasonal vegetables and their availability is ensured throughout the year.
- You can easily take your little one's favorite products with you on trips and vacations.

Potential Dangers of Consuming Canned Foods
While consuming canned foods in normal amounts occasionally poses no danger to adults, we need to be cautious with young children. It is extremely important to check the list of ingredients on the can and
1. choose products preserved in salt-free and sweetener-free liquid, in pure water! High sodium consumption and sweeteners, which are not recommended for young children at all, can cause stomach and digestive issues in the short term and potentially lead to more serious illnesses in the long term.
2. look for BPA-free packaging! The inner surface of some cans is coated with plastic containing BPA, from which harmful substances can easily dissolve due to acidic foods.
3. regularly check the recall lists of manufacturers and distributors! In recent weeks and months, we have heard several times about recalled durable products that were removed from store shelves following the discovery of bacteria in them. Before giving any canned food we previously purchased to our child, be sure to check if there is any recall or emerging issue related to it.
Using Canned Foods: How to Do It?
When choosing from canned foods, pay attention to the product's ingredients, and after opening, use the entire contents of the packaging as soon as possible. If you don't need the entire contents of the cans, use a refrigerator and consume the opened cans within twenty-four hours of opening!
The soft, ready-to-use vegetables found in cans can be used for meals on their own, or in vegetable creams, vegetable purees, vegetable puffs, or as soup ingredients or side dishes.
Don't be distrustful! Keep an open eye on the world and try occasional consumption of canned foods yourself!
