Can we give honey to the baby?

Can we give honey to the baby?

Honey cookies, gingerbread, honey cream and of course tea flavored with honey are indispensable parts of winter. Naturally, enthusiastic mothers, encouraging grandmothers with captivating looks, and well-meaning relatives would gladly offer the little one all these delicacies. But is it allowed, and if so, why not? I have gathered the most important information for you on this topic!

We can give honey to the baby if

-  the honey was purchased from a certified producer or retailer and the path of the honey is traceable;

- the little one is at least one year old, so their body can effectively fight against bacteria that cause botulism;

-   the above conditions are met and the little one has caught a cold, is suspiciously lethargic or sick.

Consumption of honey is strictly prohibited under one year of age, and its introduction into the diet is recommended in many countries only after the age of two!

What You Should Know About Honey Consumption

Honey is composed of four-fifths fructose and glucose, meaning that despite containing calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, and small amounts of vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and C, it should be consumed in moderation to avoid obesity.

Due to its antiseptic properties, it was used for disinfection for centuries, and nowadays it is a favored participant in evening rituals due to its calming effect and serotonin production stimulation.

Did you know? Honey CAN be mixed into hot drinks, but it is not advisable to cook with it, as the valuable active ingredients it contains are damaged by prolonged high heat.

Honey Cakes at Christmas

The festive spread is tempting for the whole family, but we should always be moderate, especially with young children! A linzer, gingerbread, or a slice of cake is more than enough for a healthy little one, as sweets are an extra that comes in addition to the normal amount of food.

Moreover, the flour, milk, butter, sugar, eggs, honey, cocoa, nuts, and poppy seeds found in cakes are all potential allergens, so only give them to the little one if you are sure they won't cause problems! In case of allergic reactions, stomach pain, or discomfort, we won't be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing the difficulties and won't be able to avoid the trouble later.

The best option is to prepare sweets that fit into the toddler's diet, such as apple pie, fruit rice, and puree made from unsweetened chestnut paste, all of which are classic and toddler-friendly desserts. Let's make them together!
