Nivea cream is part of the first beauty care line of the international German concern Beiersdorf AG from Hamburg. It was introduced in December 1911. The cream was created by chemist Isaak Lifschütz, dermatologist Paul Unna and pharmacist Oskar Troplowitz, and the company owner was Beiersdorf. They used water, oil, glycerin, citric acid and a new ingredient, eucerin, which made something previously unseen possible. It is able to help water and oil form a stable, long-lasting base, the end result of which is the cream. The resulting product was given the name Nivea, which comes from Latin and means snow white.

Over the following years, NIVEA's research led to numerous developments in skin care that are now taken for granted. Face cream, body lotion, sunscreen, alcohol-free aftershave, pump sprays, face care for mature skin, anti-wrinkle creams with Q10 coenzyme – all of these were introduced by NIVEA.
