Tomatoes originated in South America and only became known in Europe after the 16th century. In medieval Europe, its shape was very reminiscent of the highly poisonous nightshade, and even the tableware of wealthier families did not help the acceptance of the fruit and vegetable. The tin plates used at that time caused the acid in the tomatoes to dissolve toxic substances, so after a few deaths, the desire to consume tomatoes waned.
