Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension is a unique medicine that forms a protective layer on the stomach and helps relieve symptoms in just 3 minutes, for up to 4 hours. It can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This layer prevents acid reflux and keeps the stomach contents away from the oesophageal wall for up to 4 hours, thus alleviating the unpleasant symptoms caused by heartburn and acid reflux. - It can be used to treat the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, such as acid reflux, heartburn and reflux-related indigestion, symptoms associated with reflux oesophagitis - Can be given from 12 years of age - Can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding Irregular eating Irregular or too fast meals can also adversely affect the stomach's acid production. Late dinners Do not lie down immediately after meals, because in a horizontal position stomach acid can more easily flow back into the oesophagus. Wait about three hours after dinner or before going to bed. Foods consumed Avoid eating fatty, spicy, hot foods and acidic fruits (e.g. citrus fruits), as these increase acid production. What is Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension and what is it used for? Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension belongs to a group of medicines called “reflux suppressants”. It exerts its effect by forming a protective layer on top of the stomach contents. This layer prevents acid reflux and keeps the stomach contents away from the oesophageal wall for up to 4 hours, thus alleviating the unpleasant symptoms caused by heartburn and acid reflux. The product can be used to treat the symptoms of gastro-oesophageal reflux (i.e. the “reflux” of stomach contents into the oesophagus), such as acid reflux, heartburn and reflux-related indigestion, for example after meals or during pregnancy, and symptoms associated with reflux oesophagitis. 2. What you need to know before you use Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension Do not use Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension - if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substances of mint flavoured oral suspension or to any of the other ingredients of this medicine: very rarely breathing difficulties or skin rashes occur (for a full list of ingredients, see section “Further information”). Warnings and precautions Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension should be used with caution: The medicine contains small amounts of sodium (6.2 mmol/10 ml) and calcium (1.6 mmol/10 ml). - If you have been advised to follow a low salt diet, please talk to your doctor. - Please inform your doctor about the salt content of the medicine if you have or have had severe kidney or heart disease, as certain salts may affect such conditions. If symptoms persist after seven days of use, consult your doctor. Other medicines and Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension Do not take this medicine within two hours of taking other medicines (by mouth), as it may affect how well they work. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Pregnancy and breastfeeding The medicine can be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension contains methyl, propyl parahydroxybenzoate The product contains methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoate, which may cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed). 3. How to use Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension For oral use. Shake well before use! Adults, including the elderly, and children over 12 years of age: 10-20 ml after meals and at bedtime (maximum four times a day). Children under 12 years of age should only take it on medical advice. If you take more Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension than you should If you accidentally take too much of the medicine, it is unlikely to cause any harm, but it may cause a feeling of bloating. If symptoms persist, consult your doctor or pharmacist. If you forget to take Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension If you forget to take a dose, do not take double the amount the next time, just continue taking the medicine as normal. 4. Possible side effects Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience these side effects, stop taking the product and see a doctor immediately. Very rarely (in less than 1 in 10,000 people) hypersensitivity to the ingredients of the product may cause skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, dizziness, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. Reporting of side effects If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this leaflet. You can also report side effects directly via the contact details provided in Appendix V. By reporting side effects you can help provide more information on the safety of this medicine. 5. How to store Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton after “EXP”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store below 30oC in the original package. Do not refrigerate. Do not freeze. Check the integrity of the safety strip on the cap before first use! Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to throw away medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment. 6. Contents of the pack and other information What Gaviscon mint flavoured oral suspension contains - The active substances of the product are: 500 mg sodium alginate, 267 mg sodium hydrogen carbonate and 160 mg calcium carbonate in 10 ml suspension. - Other ingredients: carbomer, methyl (E218) and propyl (E216) parahydroxybenzoate, sodium saccharin, sodium hydroxide, mint flavour No.4, mint flavour No.5, purified water. The product does not contain sugar or gluten.
