Patient information BETADINE SOLUTION Skin and mucous membrane disinfectant Betadine solution is a disinfectant preparation with a broad antimicrobial spectrum, which is suitable for skin and mucous membrane disinfection. The preparation contains 10 mg/ml of free active iodine as a disinfectant active ingredient. Antimicrobial spectrum: bactericidal, fungicidal, selective virucidal, protocid. Toxicological classification: Toxicity class: "Practically non-toxic" (M-IV.) Hazard class: "Practically non-hazardous" (V.-D.) Field of application: for skin disinfection before injections, blood collection, punctures, biopsies, transfusions, infusions; for skin and mucous membrane disinfection before surgery; for aseptic wound treatment; for bacterial and fungal skin infections; for complete or partial personal disinfection of patients undergoing surgery (so-called disinfectant bathing). Contraindications: In case of iodine sensitivity, hyperthyroidism, thyroid adenoma, dermatitis, renal failure, before radioactive iodine treatment, when using thyroid therapeutics. Treatment of premature babies, newborns and infants, as well as use from the 3rd month of pregnancy and during breastfeeding should be avoided and can only be considered on an individual basis, under constant medical supervision! Use: Betadine solution is used concentrated (undiluted), or in a 10% (1:10 ratio) or 1% (1:100 ratio) aqueous solution, depending on the area of use: before injection, puncture, blood collection, transfusion, infusion, biopsy, for surgical skin disinfection used on intact skin: must be used concentrated (undiluted), with an exposure time of at least 1-2 minutes after application. For aseptic wound treatment, treatment of burned skin, disinfection of mucous membranes, bacterial and fungal skin infections: 10% (diluted 1:10) Betadine solution diluted with water should be used. for patient bathing before surgery: Betadine solution should be used in a concentration of 1% (dilution ratio 1:100) for the patient's disinfectant bath. It is most practical to apply the diluted Betadine solution evenly to the body surface, then rinse with lukewarm water after an exposure time of at least 2 minutes. Dilutions of Betadine solution should always be prepared fresh before use. The diluted solution must not be stored! Betadine solution can be removed from textiles with lukewarm water, in case of heavier contamination with Na-thiosulfate solution (fixer solution). Warning: The dark brown color of Betadine solution indicates its effectiveness. The fading color also indicates the decreasing antimicrobial effect. The decomposition of the solution is also accelerated by light and temperatures above 40 °C. Betadine solution has antimicrobial effect between pH 2-7. The preparation cannot be used together with enzymatic wound ointments and mercury-containing disinfectants. The PVP-iodine complex of Betadine solution is incompatible with reducing agents, alkaloid salts and acidic substances.
