Producer information
Asahi Breweries, Ltd. is one of the major beer brewing companies in Japan; its headquarters are in Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Incidentally, "Asahi" (朝日) means sunrise in Japanese. The Asahi company was originally founded in Osaka. During the First World War, German prisoners of war worked in the factory. This was how Japan tried to learn the tricks of European brewing. The result was Asahi, which was considered the Japanese beer that could compete with the Germans.
In May 2016, the European Commission approved the merger of the brewing groups AB Inbev and SABMiller, as part of which SABMiller - as a commitment made in order to obtain the permit - undertook to sell its Western European interests to Asahi. With this, Asahi is emerging as a major player in the European beer market.
