According to legend, nachos were born in a restaurant near the Mexican-American border, where the guests who came in could not have dinner because the kitchen was closed. The head waiter solved the awkward situation by cutting triangular slices from corn tortillas, frying them until crispy, and serving them with grated cheddar cheese and sliced jalapenos.

The original form of nachos is listed as an appetizer on the menus of Mexican restaurants (supplemented with some kind of sauce - salsa, avocado, guacamole), but nowadays it is most popular as a snack, supplemented with some kind of dip, or in modern cuisine it is also used to coat vegetables and meats that are crushed into small pieces.
