The Stephanotis floribunda, also known as Madagascar jasmine, is an evergreen climbing plant native to Madagascar, which is very popular among indoor gardeners worldwide. In nurseries and flower shops, it is usually found trained on a round support, which makes it truly spectacular.
The secret to the plant's special beauty lies in its dark green, leathery leaves and snow-white, star-shaped flowers that bloom in umbels. Its flowering period lasts from June to September, during which time we can not only admire its unparalleled beauty but also enjoy its pleasant fragrance.
Needs and Care of Stephanotis floribunda
Stephanotis floribunda thrives best in a bright location protected from direct sunlight, where the temperature is 20-25 °C in the summer months, dropping to 12-14 °C in winter. It is sensitive to drafts and frequent movement, especially during the formation of flower buds, so it is important to choose a permanent spot for it.
Establishing the correct watering routine is essential for the plant's care. From March to August, it requires regular but careful watering; it's important that its soil doesn't dry out, but overwatering should also be avoided. Use soft water at room temperature for watering.
Starting from autumn, to allow the shoots to mature, the amount of watering should be reduced, while in the second half of autumn and winter, the soil should be kept just moist. For healthy growth and abundant flowering, it is advisable to fertilize every two weeks from spring until the end of summer.
It requires a pleasantly humid environment, so especially during the summer, it will appreciate frequent misting with water.
Repotting is also an important part of Stephanotis floribunda care. It is recommended to repot every two years in spring, using type B potting soil mixed with sand, and a pot one size larger than the previous one.
If the plant is already too large to repot, another option for refreshing the growing medium is to remove the top layer of soil and replace it with fresh soil.
