Nivea cream is part of the first beauty care line of the international German concern Beiersdorf AG from Hamburg. It was launched in December 1911. The cream was created by chemist Isaak Lifschütz, dermatologist Paul Unna and pharmacist Oskar Troplowitz, and the company owner was Beiersdorf. They used water, oil, glycerin, citric acid and a new ingredient, eucerin, which made something unprecedented possible. It is capable of helping water and oil form a long-lasting stable base, the end result of which is the cream. The product thus created was given the Latin name Nivea, which means snow white.

Over the following years, NIVEA's research has led to numerous developments in skin care that are now taken for granted. Face cream, body lotion, sunscreen, alcohol-free after-shave products, pump sprays, face care products for mature skin, anti-wrinkle products containing Q10 coenzyme – all of these were introduced by NIVEA.
