Nutella® was originally a clever answer to a difficult problem: the cocoa shortage following the Second World War.

Pietro Ferrero, an Italian confectioner from Piedmont, created a sweet, spreadable cream from hazelnuts, sugar and a little of the then rare cocoa. He formed the mass into a loaf shape - which could later be sliced and placed on slices of bread. He christened the delicacy 'Giandujot', after the famous carnival character of the time. The Ferrero company was officially founded on 14 May 1946.
