Producer information
Starting a new large winery in Villány in the early 2000s? A crazy idea. Especially if most of the starting team is not even from there. Winemakers Ildikó Markó and László Latorczai came from Budapest and Lake Balaton, and the owner, Krisztián Sauska - despite his childhood in Somerek and his Villány roots - was still considered an "American" in local folklore. Yet it was precisely this lack of a past that gave the freedom from which the unusual Sauska name, reinforced by numerous cuvées, could emerge. The new vintage of the Cuvée 7s and the international success of the Cuvée 5 made the Sauska winery known in Tokaj as well.
They were among the first to develop their soon-to-be-popular dry white wine selection, which, in addition to the native Furmint, Yellow Muscat and Hárslevelű, also includes wines that have become audience favorites, such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The base material for their methode traditionelle sparkling wines, which will soon be produced in their newly opened Budafock cellar, is exclusively their own Tokaj grapes, and the basis of their quality-oriented philosophy is terroir and loyalty to it.
