Topaz Apple – Variety Information and Characteristics

Origin:
The Topaz apple is a Czech-bred variety, created by crossing the Rubín and Vanda varieties at the Kutná Hora research institute in Prague in the 1980s. It is becoming increasingly popular in Europe, including Hungary, especially in organic (bio) cultivation.

  • Size: medium-large or large (150–180 g).

  • Shape: slightly flattened, regular, attractive shape.

  • Skin: base colour is yellow-green, covered by an orange-red blush, often striped.

  • Flesh: firm, crisp, juicy, cream-coloured.

  • Taste: pleasantly sweet-sour, harmonious, with a spicy aroma – considered by many to be one of the finest winter apples.

  • Harvest time: mid-October – early November, but can be stored until spring in a cool place or cold storage.
