About the manufacturer

The classic master of combining chocolate and alcohol was the French-born Emil Gerbeaud, who became a Hungarian legend. He settled in Budapest in 1884 and made the confectionery, which still bears his name, flourish. He created the "konyakmeggy" (cognac cherry): intact, pitted cherries preserved in cognac, coated in dark chocolate, and after a short time, the proximity of sugar and alcohol dissolved into a characteristic filling. This wonder, crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside, is a true Hungaricum. Since then, it has spread widely, many copies have been made, but the original harmony of flavors – the dark chocolate, the sour cherry, and the sweet, alcoholic filling – is inimitable.

The secret of the special, liquid cream hidden under the chocolate shell lies in the alcoholic cherry liquefying the fondant cream within a few weeks. In 1964, the process was mechanized, which reversed the order of the process: first, the chocolate shell is formed, and then the cherry and the alcoholic cream are placed into it.

In 1996, the most well-known, consistently high-quality cognac cherry received the name Cherry Queen.
