Interestingly, it owes its name not to a botanist, but to a German physicist who was a dedicated collector of South African plants.

Its homeland is South Africa and East Africa, but it is also very popular in our everyday lives in Hungary, as it is often kept as an ornamental plant because of its beautiful appearance. It was naturalised in Europe at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. There are many different varieties, with funnel-shaped flowers and spreading flowers, which are usually yellow, white or pink and are arranged in a special cluster. The plant grows from a small bulb and has long, narrow leaves.
