About the brand
Gémklub started as a board game club in 1986 and grew out of it as a board game publisher. Initially, a few alternative thinking young people made their get-togethers meaningful by playing board games. The most dedicated members of the team founded Gém Klub Első Magyar Játékkiadó Kft. in 2001, but real business activity was only associated with the non-profit activity from 2006, with the launch of Hungary's first board game webshop and professional website. In Hungary, board games in which the author's name also appeared on the box were first published under the auspices of Gémklub. At the time of the publisher's foundation, the selection included only a few board games developed in-house and a few foreign games with Hungarian translations.
During its more than 20 years of existence, the Gémklub board game publisher has published 24 board games developed in-house from 14 Hungarian game authors, nearly 350 foreign games in Hungarian, and has put thousands of games into circulation with Hungarian translations.
Several of the games published by Gémklub have also won the international Spiel des Jahres - Game of the Year award: 2010: Dixit, 2013: Hanabi, 2015: Colt Express, 2016: Codenames, 2017: Kingdomino, 2018: Azul, 2019. Just One, 2020. Pictures, and in 2022 Cascadia became the Game of the Year.
