It's not even a hundred years since we started celebrating Children's Day

Every parent and child eagerly awaits Children's Day, yet few know the origin of the celebration and the most interesting international traditions. Educate yourself with Kifli!

Children's Day was first celebrated in 1925 when the UN (then the League of Nations) convened the World Conference on Child Welfare in Geneva. After the conference, the Soviet Union was the first to celebrate this special day, and gradually other countries adopted it, thus establishing the tradition of Children's Day – in Hungary, for example, it has been officially celebrated since 1931 on the last Sunday of May each year, but the date varies by country.

In 1954, the UN officially included Children's Day in the international calendar, designating November 20 as the date for International Children's Day. The aim of the celebration is to draw attention to children's rights, child protection, and to provide children with a joyful day. This is realized differently in each country: in most cultures, as in ours, celebrations, competitions, and performances are organized, focusing on entertainment rather than learning.

However, there are exciting traditions around the world:

In Japan, Children's Day (Kodomo no Hi) is celebrated on May 5. According to local custom, families hang carp-shaped windsocks, called koinobori, in front of their houses, symbolizing the child's strength and health. Families prepare special cakes for the children, such as kashiwa mochi and chimaki.

In Turkey, Children's Day is celebrated on April 23, on the same day as National Sovereignty, and on this day, children "take over" the roles of adults. Students can hold official positions, even in the government, to experience what it's like to be a leader. In addition, colorful celebrations and parades are held in schools and communities.

In India, Children's Day is celebrated on a completely different date, November 14, on the birthday of the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru held children in high regard as "the foundation of the nation."
