Gin Guide

It is less known at home than vodka or beer, yet it is an essential part of our favorite cocktails, while experiencing a renaissance worldwide. Versatile, trendy, and easy to make: this is gin, about which you can now learn everything!

The first sips

“Drowning sorrows in wine” – goes the saying. Although many associate alcohol with dispelling sadness, the history of gin begins elsewhere: it was previously recommended more for bodily ailments than for the soul. The healing drink recommended “against all kinds of diseases” was registered by the Dutch in 1552, although some records suggest that similar distillates were made by local monks in what was then Italy as early as the 11th century. Over the following centuries, it quickly became the favorite drink (and sorrow dispeller) of surrounding peoples, including the English. This was greatly supported by the fact that the English government at the time did not require a license for gin distillation. It later spread to the colonies and then the whole world under English influence. Today, there is hardly a country where gin is not produced!

But what is gin?

The answer in short: a spirit primarily based on grain (but definitely with a neutral base), whose characteristic flavor is given by juniper. It is no coincidence that the base of homemade gins is often vodka, which is flavored with juniper during distillation, and optionally with other spices and herbs.

London Dry Gin

London Dry Gin, the most well-known distilled gin. Its flavor is given by the spices soaked in the alcohol, after which they are distilled a second time. It got its name because it became popular in London, a much drier distillate than the gins common in the 17th century.

Characteristics

The gin must have a neutral flavor base and at least 40% alcohol content to have the London dry classification on its bottle. Its flavor profile is typically dominated by juniper, occasionally with hints of citrus and coriander.
