Questionable ingredients in baby cosmetics

The cosmetic industry uses several ingredients whose harmlessness is debated, and there are both data proving and refuting their harmful effects on the body.

Since I advocate for skincare with natural cosmetics, I recommend avoiding cosmetics containing the following ingredients not only for babies but also during childhood and adulthood:

- parabens

- BHT

- mineral oils

- sodium lauryl sulfate

- synthetic colorants and fragrances

- synthetic preservatives

- boric acid, borax

These substances are foreign to the skin, making them unsuitable for caring for delicate baby skin, and each has a more valuable alternative for the skin.

Babies' skin is still very thin and permeable, so substances that come into contact with the skin are absorbed more completely, which is why their skin care requires more attention.

Mineral oils, paraffin, and petroleum jelly clog the skin's pores, preventing it from breathing. In the short term, we feel that our skin is well hydrated because it completely covers the skin, preventing moisture from escaping, thus keeping it hydrated. In the long term, these substances negatively affect the condition of the skin by not allowing it to breathe.

Boric acid and borax are most commonly found in diaper creams. They are used for their mild disinfectant and antifungal effects. However, when used long-term, regularly, and inappropriately in high doses, they can have adverse effects on the reproductive organs. Avoid diaper creams that contain borax or boric acid.

Parabens are used to preserve creams. They are extremely irritating, outdated substances that very often cause allergic reactions.

SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is a cleansing agent, known as a surfactant. Its cleansing activity is high, and excessive use can disrupt the skin's normal flora and pH balance. Additionally, allergic reactions to it are very common.

Synthetic fragrances often cause irritation and are not good for babies' nervous systems.
