First Rays of Sunshine - Sun Protection in Childhood

First Sunrays - Sun Protection in Childhood

Childhood is greatly enriched by time spent outdoors, long walks, family hikes, and playing with friends. It contributes to the development of children's immune system, is important for their motor skills development, and positively influences the formation of their social relationships and the maintenance of their mental health.

During the summer, we spend particularly a lot of time outdoors, possibly by the water. We enjoy the summer and the sunshine because it boosts our mood and contributes to the body's vitamin D synthesis, but we must also pay attention to protecting and caring for our own and our children's skin due to the high UV radiation at this time.

Children's skin differs from adults:

- Their skin is thinner, the cells of the stratum corneum are more loosely connected, and its protective function is less mature, so various substances are absorbed faster and more completely through their skin.

- The cells that produce melanin (which gives our skin its color, the substance responsible for pigmentation) are less active, making them more sensitive to UV radiation. Melanin protects against sunburn.

Always pay attention to the following!

- Never expose your child to direct sunlight

- Minimize the time spent in the sun between 11 AM and 3 PM, as UV rays are most intense during this period

- Use tightly woven or UV-protected, but well-ventilated clothing

- Protect your child with a sun hat and sunglasses

- You can also protect your skin through diet and fluid intake: vegetables and fruits rich in carotenoids (red, yellow, orange) strengthen the skin's natural protective function. Ensure the consumption of an adequate amount of clean water.

- Gradual acclimatization to the sun is recommended

- Use sunscreen

What type of sunscreen should we choose?

Based on the filter in the cream, we distinguish between products containing chemical and physical filters. Sunscreens with chemical filters penetrate deeper layers of the skin and can absorb UV rays due to their chemical structure. On the other hand, sunscreens with physical or mineral filters do not absorb, remain on the surface of the skin, and reflect or scatter UV rays, thus preventing them from penetrating the skin. Consequently, physical sunscreens are considered safer. These types of sunscreens can be found in pharmacies, organic stores, and drugstores. Manufacturers label them with the terms "Mineral" or "contains physical sunscreen." Besides the filter, it is worth paying attention to the other ingredients as well. It is best to choose a product made from natural ingredients.

Most sunscreens containing physical or mineral filters can be used from newborn age, but it is safest not to expose your child to the sun at all until they are six months old.

Don't forget about hydration and regeneration at the end of the day!

Sun exposure takes a toll on our skin, so it is important to regenerate it. At the end of a pleasant day spent by the water, it is important to thoroughly cleanse your skin during a shower and choose a body lotion rich in valuable plant ingredients for skin care.

The SHEDO Body Lotion for dry skin (lavender-orange) is ideal for this purpose, as its ingredients effectively hydrate and nourish our skin.
