Today, many families around the world start their day with a smile and Nutella spread. Nutella was originally a clever response to a difficult problem: the cocoa shortage after the Second World War. Pietro Ferrero, an Italian confectioner from Piedmont, created a sweet, spreadable cream made from hazelnuts, sugar and a little cocoa - which was very rare at the time. He shaped the mass into a loaf - which could later be sliced and placed on slices of bread. He named the delicacy 'Giandujot', after the famous carnival character of the time. The Ferrero company was officially founded on 14 May 1946.
