The pussy willow is a symbol of Easter and spring, its significance is linked to the Christian Easter holiday, the celebration of Palm Sunday. In the absence of palm branches, in Hungary, people commemorate Christ's entry into Jerusalem with pussy willows, i.e. the flowering twigs of willow species, and the pussy willow branches are also consecrated and used to decorate homes. The word "pussy willow" has the same origin as the Hungarian word "birka" (sheep), in other languages it got its name from its resemblance to the soft fur of a cat: catkin, chaton, Kätzchen (English, French, German). The fluffy, spherical inflorescences, which we know as pussy willows, are actually the inflorescences of willows, which should be collected before flowering, when they have already "burst", i.e. the bud scales have fallen off. Although all willow species have pussy willow inflorescences, the pussy willows of goat willow (Salix caprea) and grey willow (Salix cinerea) are the most commonly collected in early spring, before the leaves sprout. They occur in wet habitats, in marshes, willow groves, swamps, and along slow-flowing rivers. Goat willow is a shrub, a small tree, its twigs are covered with greyish hairs, but later become bald, its pussy willows are reddish. Grey willow grows to a height of 4-7 m, its twigs are downy, its pussy willows are less elongated, spherical. Both species flower in March-April, their male specimens are collected. The pussy willow twigs picked in time remain beautiful even when dried, they can be kept in a vase or tied into a spring wreath and can decorate our homes for a long time.
